El Primer Día (The First Day)

After circling Managua a few times, the flight crew successfully brought us down safely in the midst of a thunderstorm at Augusto Sandino Airport. Our drivers then navigated the deluge of water and brought us to Casa San Juan.
Our group was greeted with warm smiles and generous hospitality as we arrived for our first day at the Cultural Center of Batahola Norte (CCBN), as we gathered to hear inspiring words from members of the administrative team and to meet with other individuals who serve on the staff of the Center.

Emmanuel and Christina collaborated to provide us with an in-depth orientation to the Center by sharing background about the many vivid murals that adorn the walls of the CCBN.

We rounded out the morning by spending time with students in the English language classes that are offered at the Center. The exchange began with introductions and icebreakers, and quickly transitioned into much deeper sharing about our families, our interests, and our dreams.

At lunchtime, we traveled with our small groups to enjoy outstanding home-cooked meals in the homes of our host families. The time we spent allowed us to experience traditional Nicaraguan foods while also practicing our Spanish in a welcoming environment where we could learn more about the daily lives and aspirations of our gracious hosts.

Another highlight for many in our group was the afternoon spent dancing, making crafts, and face-painting with the children at the Center. After the initial exchange of names, many formed connections that will continue to deepen as our time here in Managua continues to unfold...

Many thanks for your prayers for our group this week and for all who find hope and inspiration through the CCBN!
